LEARN, CONNECT, GROW

Crossing All Bridges Connections Campaign

In 2018 we are embarking on a campaign to raise 2.5 million dollars to relocate Crossing All Bridges Learning Centre (CABLC) to a new home, a home that they own at the former St. Bernard’s School on Sky Acres Drive in Brantford, Ontario. The location is perfect.

This updated facility will allow CABLC and its social enterprise Shredding Barriers to have the space they require to not only operate efficiently, but also grow.

Given the age of the building and the accommodations required to make the space functional for CABLC and Shredding Barriers, we need all the help we can get to raise 2. 5 million dollars. With easy access and a solid infrastructure, CABLC’s new home will provide space for growth and offer more opportunities to adults living with developmental disabilities in Brantford, Brant, Norfolk County and beyond.

BACKGROUND

Engaging in a Lifetime of Learning

In 2003 a group of local mothers (our four founding members) wanted something different for their children living with developmental disabilities. At the age of 21 their children had aged out of the public school system. Unfortunately the next stages of life, including post-secondary education, independent living, or obtaining employment, were not manageable or available for them. These forward-thinking mothers wanted more for their children. They wanted affordable programs offering lifelong learning, a social and welcoming environment and inclusive community experiences.

In November of 2003, CABLC opened its doors with two staff and 10 students and started delivering on its original mission “to provide dynamic programs and opportunities designed to maximize individual potential for adults living with developmental challenges.” Today, 15 years later, CABLC serves almost 70 families from the Brantford, Brant and Norfolk communities.

CABLC provides education, meaning, and social connection to individuals with developmental disabilities and provides an imperative life-line for families of these individuals.

OUR VISION

Individuals with varying developmental abilities embrace a love of life, a love of learning and lifelong friendships in an inclusive and welcoming community.

Crossing All Bridges provides participants with value and meaning to their lives. Programs include:

  • Life skills
  • Job Readiness Training
  • Shredding Barriers Social Enterprise
  • Media and Literacy
  • Culinary Skills
  • Creative Arts
  • Recreation and Wellness
  • Woodworking

Shredding Barriers is a social enterprise of Crossing All Bridges Learning Centre (CABLC). Shredding Barriers is unlike any other document destruction service that serves the Brantford/Brant area. Not only do they offer safe and secure destruction of sensitive documents, they provide employment opportunities for the participants of CABLC.  Shredding Barriers believes in equality, and wants to remove barriers to employment. In fact they’re not just removing barriers – they’re shredding them!

Finding employment in today’s economy is challenging for the typical adult, it is even more of a challenge for adults with developmental disabilities. Barriers include stigma, communication, inexperience, and accessibility. When the community chooses Shredding Barriers, not only are they being provided with a valuable service, they are providing meaningful and paid work to a deserving group of individuals who otherwise wouldn’t be given the opportunity.
