Participants develop the preliminary skills to engage in basic culinary activities that are necessary to prepare for independently living. Participants are engaged in learning proper and appropriate cooking methods and practices.

The purpose of the basic culinary program is to engage participants in hands on experiences with the use of kitchen tools and equipment. Participants will focus on gaining skills necessary for safe food preparation while preparing the food for lunch. Participants are encouraged to incorporate Canada's National Food Guide when menu planning to ensure nutritional needs are met. Participants enjoy the lunch time period to engage in the social atmosphere and practice meal time etiquette skills. The practical side of the basic culinary program is to learn about:

  • reading newspaper flyers,
  • food costs, budget skills,
  • time management
  • reading cookbooks
  • measurement skills
  • what are possible job readiness skills
