Working alongside the Culinary Instructor, participants put their culinary skills to the test. They prepare a wide variety of delicious meals daily, from a classic grilled cheese to a variety of international cuisine. Participants learn about Safe Food Handling practices and proper use of kitchen equipment.
The Instructor stresses the importance of Canada’s National Food Guide when planning the menu to ensure nutritional needs are met. They also utilize the outdoor space and cook with foods grown in our gardens.
The practical side of the Basic Culinary program is to learn about: food costs and budgeting while grocery shopping, time management, healthy food choices, reading cookbooks and following recipes. Participants in the Basic Culinary program also volunteer weekly at a local elementary school breakfast program.
